NCAA Game Summary - Connecticut at Pittsburgh

(Wednesday, October 26th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 35, Connecticut 20

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Tino Sunseri threw two touchdown passes and ran one in as Pittsburgh downed Connecticut, 35-20, in a Big East battle at Heinz Field.

Sunseri went 29-for-42 for 419 yards and both of his TD passes went to Mike Shanahan. Zach Brown also ran in a score and Ronald Jones had a late touchdown pass to Devin Street for the Panthers (4-4, 2-1 Big East), who had lost their previous two and were coming off a bye week.

It wasn't all good news for Pitt, though, as running back Ray Graham left the game early with a leg injury.

Tackled on a short run, Graham stayed on the ground and grabbed his right knee and eventually had to be helped off the field by trainers. After being tended to briefly on the sideline, he was taken off the field on a cart.

The second leading rusher in the nation, he was averaging 134.1 yards per game coming into the contest.

Johnny McEntee went 17-for-33 with 193 yards and two scores for the Huskies (3-5, 1-2), who have dropped three of their last four and were also coming off a bye week. Kashif Moore caught six passes for 106 yards and a score.

Pitt scored on its first touch as Sunseri faked a pass and took it in himself from eight yards out exactly five minutes in. The eight-play, 84-yard drive took a little over two minutes.

Late in the first, the Panthers marched 62 yards in seven plays and Sunseri capped it off by hitting Shanahan over the middle with a pass and the big junior took it in from 17 yards out with 54 seconds left in the frame.

Kevin Harper missed a 49-yard field goal to the right for Pitt with 10:01 left in the second, and UConn took advantage of the miscue with a 40-yard boot from Dave Teggart to get on the board.

However, Teggart later missed a 49-yard field goal and four plays later, Brown took the ball in from three yards out for a 21-3 lead. The preceding play saw Sunseri and Cameron Saddler hook up for a 40-yard gain.

On their first possession of the third, McEntee and Moore got together on a 62-yard score and Teggart added a 31-yard field goal of the team's next possession to make it a 21-13 game with 4:08 left in the third.

However, the Panthers quickly answered as on the fifth play, Sunseri again found Shanahan over the middle and he avoided a tackler on his way to a 27- yard score for a 28-13 advantage.

Jones' only pass of the game was a 14-yard score to Street with 3:22 left to give Pitt a 35-13 lead, and McEntee and Ryan Griffin got together on a 14-yard score in the last minute to account for the final score.
