NCAA Game Summary - UCF at BYU
(Friday, September 23rd)
Final Score: BYU 24, UCF 17
Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Bryan Kariya's six-yard run accounted for the go-
ahead score early in the fourth quarter after UCF muffed a punt deep in its
territory, helping BYU to a 24-17 victory over the Knights.
J.J. Worton couldn't handle Riley Stephenson's 67-yard punt and Michael Alisa
recovered and rumbled to the end zone. The ball was put at the 23 after an
unsportsmanlike penalty on the Cougars.
Three plays later, Kariya scored on a run up the middle with 10:29 remaining.
UCF self-destructed in the late going, with Dontravius Floyd fumbling the ball
away after a reception at midfield. Jeff Godfrey was picked off by Joe Sampson
at the BYU (2-2) three inside three minutes left.
Godfrey was sacked by Kyle Van Noy, helping to thwart a last-chance for UCF
(2-2), which failed to give head coach George O'Leary his 100th career
victory.
Cody Hoffman had a 93-yard kickoff return for a TD for BYU. Jake Heaps
connected on 16-of-34 passes for 133 yards with one interception for the
Cougars, who were outgained 399-260 overall.
Godfrey ended 17-of-25 for 272 yards, but was sacked four times. A.J. Guyton
had nine catches for 163 yards.
Nick Cattoi drilled a 34-yard field goal for UCF early in the first quarter,
but Justin Sorensen tied it with a 37-yard boot later in the period.
Godfrey's 10-yard run to the end zone moved the Knights in front on the final
play of the first following an interception.
JJ Di Luigi's 16-yard TD run tied it for BYU with 8:13 left in the third, but
less than four minutes later Godfrey scored on a one-yard run. Then came
Hoffman's scoring return, the first on a kickoff by BYU since 1998.
