NCAA Game Summary - NC State at Virginia

(Saturday, October 22nd)

Final Score: NC State 28, Virginia 14

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - An opportunistic defense led the way for NC State on the road, as the Wolfpack earned their first ACC win of the season, topping Virginia 28-14 at Scott Stadium.

NC State (4-3, 1-2 ACC) held Virginia to a mere 249 yards of total offense, recorded three interceptions and scored a defensive touchdown.

Quarterback Mike Glennon led the charge offensively for the Wolfpack, completing 20-of-36 passes, for 231 yards and three TDs.

NC State wideout Byran Underwood finished the game with just three catches, but turned them into 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterbacks Michael Rocco and David Watford both struggled for Virginia (4-3, 1-2), combining for just 11-of-35 passing, for a meager 125 yards. Watford was also responsible for three interceptions in the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, the hometown Cavaliers opened things up in the second frame, thanks to a six-yard touchdown pass from Rocco to Clifton Richardson, capping off a 14-play drive.

The lead didn't last long however, as Glennon found Tony Creecy for a five- yard touchdown five minutes later to tie things up. The Wolfpack took the lead less than a minute later when Glennon threw a 33-yard pass to Underwood. The scoring play was setup by a Virginia turnover, as All-American candidate David Amerson picked off Watford at the Virginia 33-yard line.

Glennon and Underwood hooked up again late in the third quarter, this one from 79 yards out to give the Wolfpack a 21-7 lead.

The Cavaliers answered quickly, as Watford threw a 60-yard TD pass to Tim Smith on Virginia's first play of the ensuing drive, cutting NC State's lead in half, keeping Virginia within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter, 21-14.

The final frame belonged to the NC State defense, which stymied Virginia on every turn, including scoring a touchdown on a 12-yard interception return by Amerson, his second pick of the game. Amerson leads the FBS in interceptions with eight on the year. His eight picks ties the NC State single-season record set by Art Rooney in 1937 and then again in 1938.

NC State ended a four-game road losing streak to Virginia and won in Charlottesville for the first time since 1994.
