NCAA Game Summary - Arizona at U-S-C
(Saturday, October 1st)
Final Score: USC 48, Arizona 41
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Behind a record-setting performance
by quarterback Matt Barkley, the USC Trojans were able to hold off the
Arizona Wildcats in Pac-12 play at the Coliseum, 48-41.
Barkley completed 32-of-39 passes, for a school-record 468 yards and four
TDs, while rushing for a fifth score. The 468 yards eclipsed the old school
record of 448 yards, set by former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer in
2002.
Wide receiver Robert Woods benefited most by Barkley's performance, hauling
in 14 balls, for 255 yards and two scores.
Defense was scarce in the game, as USC (4-1, 2-1) outgained Arizona (1-4,
0-3), 582-554.
Arizona's Nick Foles had his fifth career 400-yard passing day, finishing
41-of-53, for 425 yards with four TDs and two INTs, but it wasn't enough to
earn a conference win.
It took the Trojans just two plays to get in the end zone, as Barkley
hooked up with Woods on two passes, the first spanning nine yards and
the second going for an 82-yard touchdown.
Arizona drove down the field immediately following the TD, but
Foles threw an interception to USC's T.J. McDonald that led to a 46-yard
field goal by Andre Heidari.
The Trojans made it 17-0 with Barkley's second TD pass of the quarter,
this one a 38-yarder to Marqise Lee.
The Wildcats went on a 12-play, 75-yard drive to open the scoring in
the second quarter, as Foles hit Taimi Tutogi for a four-yard touchdown.
USC got the score right back on its next drive, as Barkley threw his
third touchdown of the half, connecting with Xavier Grimble from seven yards
out.
It took Arizona just four plays, taking 1:40 off the clock, as Foles
connected with Ka'Deem Carey for a 27-yard TD. However, Alex Zendejas'
extra point was blocked.
The Trojans got the ball one last time to close out the half, going on a
15-play, 65-yard drive culminating in a 31-yard field goal by Heidari as
time expired, giving USC a 27-12 lead at the break.
Barkley finished the half an efficient 22-of-26, for 301 yards and
three scores.
Barkley was at it again immediately following halftime, connecting with
Woods once again, this time from 28 yards out to give the Trojans a 34-12
lead just two minutes into the second half.
Arizona followed with an 18-play drive that chewed up 8:34, as Carey
scored for the second time on the day, this one a one-yard TD run.
Foles then connected with Austin Hill on a two-point conversion to cut
USC's lead to 34-20 with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Wildcats scored again three and half minutes later, making it 34-27
with Carey's third TD of the game, this one a 16-yard run with under a
minute left in the third quarter.
USC wrestled the momentum back from Arizona 21 seconds into the
fourth quarter, as Barkley rushed for a one-yard touchdown to make it 41-27.
Arizona would not go away quietly, scoring just three and half minutes
later, on a 12-yard TD pass from Foles to Juron Criner, making it a one score
game at 41-34.
Once again, USC would answer, this time with a five-play, 79-yard drive
that was capped off with a nine-yard TD run by Curtis McNeal, giving the
Trojans a 48-34 lead with 9:28 to play.
Arizona closed out the scoring in a wild second half with Foles' fourth
TD pass of the game, a four-yarder to Hill with a minute left in the contest.
USC ran out the clock to earn its fourth victory of the season.
