Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Latavius Murray ran for 75 yards and two scores
as the UCF Knights clinched the Conference USA East Division crown with a
37-17 win at Memphis.
Jeff Godfrey completed 14-of-17 passes for 252 yards and two touchdown passes
to help UCF (9-3, 7-1 C-USA) lock up home field in the C-USA Championship
Game. Both of his TD passes went to Jamar Newsome, who finished with 118 yards
on four catches.
Ryan Williams threw for 272 yards and two TDs for Memphis (1-11, 0-8).
Godfrey got the Knights on the board first with a nine-yard touchdown run
midway through the first quarter.
Memphis tied the score at 7-7 on Williams' 23-yard scoring strike to Marcus
Rucker at the 3:38 mark of the opening quarter.
Nick Cattoi put UCF on top 10-7 with a 27-yard field goal with 6:07 remaining
in the second quarter, capping a 13-play, 55-yard drive that chewed 7:32 off
Murray tacked on another touchdown for the Knights on a four-yard run with
1:17 to play until halftime, although Cattoi missed the extra point to keep it
a 16-7 game.
Murray scored again on a seven-yard run on the opening drive of the second
half to give UCF a 23-7 lead.
Memphis answered with a 30-yard field goal by Paulo Henriques to cut the
deficit to 23-10 with 10:35 to play in the third quarter.
But UCF found the end zone again at the 14:48 mark of the fourth quarter, as
Godfrey tossed a 56-yard scoring strike to Newsome to make it a 30-10 game.
Four minutes later, Godfrey connected with Newsome again for a 23-yard
touchdown pass to break the game open.
Memphis scored on a two-yard pass from Williams to Deven Onarheim in the final
minute to close out the scoring.
UCF shut down Memphis' running game, holding the Tigers to only 23 yards and a
team average of 1.1 yards per carry.
