NCAA Game Summary - Toledo at Northern Illinois

(Tuesday, November 9th)

Final Score: Northern Illinois 65, Toledo 30

DeKalb, IL (Sports Network) - Chad Spann scored three touchdowns on the ground and Northern Illinois ran all over Toledo en route to a 65-30 drubbing in a battle of the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference's West Division.

Chad Harnish had a terrific day under center, throwing for 162 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-16 efficiency while also amassing 149 yards and a score on 13 carries for the Huskies (8-2, 6-0 MAC), winners of seven straight overall.

Spann had 70 yards on 20 totes and Akeem Daniels added two TD runs, highlighting an attack that rushed for 422 yards.

Adonis Thomas paced the Rockets (6-4, 5-1) with 152 yards and two scores on 10 carries, while Terrance Owens threw for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception on 18-of-38 passes in the loss, the program's first since a defeat at Boise State a month ago.

NIU held the ball for the first 7:20 of the game, and Spann capped the 14- play, 74-yard drive with a one-yard plunge.

Daniels got a 21-point second quarter started with a 12-yard run 3 1/2 minutes into the stanza, and after Toledo missed a field goal, Nathan Palmer hauled in a 33-yard bomb for a 21-0 lead.

In the final minute of the half, Harnish took it himself on a draw around the right end 28 yards for a comfortable margin going to the locker room.

Harnish was sacked in the end zone by Alex Johnson for a safety early in the third quarter, and, following the free kick, Thomas went in from 18 yards out for a 28-9 game less than five minutes into the third.

Spann answered with a five-yard score, and Thomas came right back with a 60- yard dash to pay dirt.

That was as close as the Rockets got, as Daniels narrowly reached the ball over the goal line at the tail end of a 50-yard gallop, and Spann barreled in for an eight-yard score following an Owens interception later in the third.

Eric Page hauled in a three-yard TD pass from Owens in the final minute of the quarter, but Tommy Davis took the ensuing kickoff back 83 yards for a 56-23 advantage.

In the fourth, NIU's Michael Cklamovski added a 43-yard field goal and Jasmin Hopkins went 55 yards for yet another long TD for the hosts.

Jerome Jones' five-yard TD reception in the final minute accounted for the final score.
