(Saturday, October 9th)

Final Score: Western Michigan 45, Ball State 16

Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Alex Carder ran for three touchdowns and threw for one more, as the Western Michigan Broncos posted a 45-16 win over the Ball State Cardinals in Mid-American Conference play at Scheumann Stadium.

Carder threw for 265 yards on 17-of-29 passing, and he added another 66 yards on 13 carries as WMU (2-3, 1-1 MAC) spoiled Ball State's Homecoming.

Cardinals' (2-4, 1-1) quarterback Keith Wenning was replaced by sophomore Kelly Page after completing only 1-of-8 passes for 15 yards and two interceptions. MiQuale Lewis finished with 64 yards on 12 carries to move into second place on Ball State's all-time rushing list.

Western Michigan jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than a minute into the game, as the Cardinals fumbled away the opening kickoff, which set Carder up with a 20-yard touchdown run to silence the home crowd. On the first play of Ball State's next drive, cornerback Lewis Toler stepped in front of a Wenning pass and returned it 24 yards for another Broncos' touchdown.

WMU extended its lead to 21-0 at the 5:44 mark of the opening frame, when Carder scored his second touchdown on a nine-yard run.

The Broncos made it a 28-0 game on the first play of the second quarter, as kicker John Potter crossed the goal line on a nine-yard run after a fake field goal.

The Cardinals finally got on the board at the 4:11 mark of the second quarter, thanks to a 41-yard touchdown run by Eric Williams. However, Ian McGarvey missed the extra point and the score remained 28-6.

Another Ball State fumble on its own 10-yard line set the Broncos up with great field position with 1:31 to play in the first half, but they had to settle for three points on a 25-yard field goal by Potter.

McGarvey cut the deficit to 31-9 on a 29-yard field goal at the 8:23 mark of the third quarter.

But WMU answered with a seven-play, 83-yard drive, capped by Carder's two-yard touchdown run.

The Broncos pushed the margin to 45-9 when Carder hit Juan Nunez for a 32-yard touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter.

A 15-yard touchdown pass from Ball State's Page to Otis Brown midway through the fourth quarter accounted for the final score.

Ball State racked up 239 rushing yards (6.3 ypc) as a team. However, the Cardinals weren't able to overcome three lost fumbles and a pair of interceptions.
