Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Dominique Davis' one-yard touchdown run in
overtime proved the difference in East Carolina's 33-27 win over the NC State
Wolfpack in a non-conference matchup at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Davis completed 37-of-53 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns for the
Pirates (4-2), who were 0-2 in non-conference games entering this contest.
True freshman Damon Magazu sealed the win with an interception on NC State's
overtime possession. Dwayne Harris paced the ECU receiving corps with nine
catches for 91 yards.
Russell Wilson threw for 322 yards and a touchdown for NC State (5-2), but he
also threw three interceptions on the day.
The Pirates marched right down on the field on their opening drive, and
Jonathan Williams found the end zone on a five-yard scamper to give ECU an
early 7-0 lead.
The Pirates took a 14-0 lead at the 3:49 mark of the first quarter, as Davis
capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Lance Lewis.
ECU extended its lead to 21-0 with five seconds to play in the opening
quarter, as Davis tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jones.
NC State responded on its next drive, when Wilson hooked up with T.J. Graham
for a 49-yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to 21-7.
The Wolfpack made it a 21-14 game at the 9:07 mark of the second quarter, as
Wilson finished off an eight-play, 88-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown
ECU pushed its lead back to 10 following Michael Barbour's 35-yard field goal
with 6:25 to play in the opening half.
Later in the same quarter, ECU lost a fumble on its own one-yard line, setting
up a touchdown run for NC State's Dean Haynes on the very next play to trim
the margin to 24-21.
The Wolfpack tied the score at 24-24 on Josh Czajkowski's 22-yard field goal
with 11:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, capping a 17-play, 85-yard drive.
His 37-yarder with just under three minutes to play gave NC State a 27-24
But ECU responded with a six-play, 43-yard drive, and Barbour knotted the
score at 27-27 on a 31-yard field goal with 1:04 to play.
The teams headed to overtime and ECU drew first blood on a one-yard touchdown
run by Davis, but Barbour missed the extra point, his first of the season.
However, the Pirates' defense bailed Barbour out on the ensuing possession, as
Magazu came up with a game-sealing interception in the end zone. NC State
committed four turnovers for the game.
