Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Russell Wilson threw a pair of touchdown
passes to help lift the NC State Wolfpack to a 29-25 win over the North
Carolina Tar Heels in ACC action at Kenan Stadium.
NC State (8-3, 5-2 ACC) is in control of its own destiny in the Atlantic
Division, needing a win next week at Maryland to lock up the division and earn
a spot in the ACC Championship on December 4th. Owen Spencer finished with 92
yards on five catches, including a highlight-reel touchdown catch in the third
T.J. Yates threw for 411 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a losing effort for
North Carolina (6-5, 3-4). He also set the school's single-season and career
North Carolina opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown pass from T.J.
Yates to Anthony Elzy with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter.
NC State tied it at 7-7 with 10:30 to play in the second quarter, as Wilson
hit Darrell Davis on a two-yard slant for a touchdown.
The teams traded field goals late in the half. Casey Barth's 19-yarder with
2:38 to play until halftime gave the Tar Heels a 10-7 lead.
NC State's Josh Czajkowski answered with a 47-yarder at the 1:08 mark to make
it a 10-10 game.
But the Tar Heels got the ball back and moved quickly down the field, and
Barth ended the half with a 49-yard field goal to put UNC back on top.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to 16-10 on Barth's 21-yard field goal with
9:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Barth added three more points on a 38-yarder at the 4:38 mark of the third
quarter to make it a 19-10 game.
NC State answered with a scoring drive, as Wilson connected with Spencer for a
dazzling two-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-goal, cutting the deficit to
The Wolfpack's special teams provided a dagger early in the fourth quarter, as
T.J. Graham returned a punt 87 yards to the end zone, giving NC State a 24-19
Czajkowski tacked on another three points with a 24-yard field goal with 5:41
UNC trimmed the margin to 27-25 on Yates' one-yard touchdown pass to Christian
Wilson with 1:05 remaining. The Tar Heels tried to tie the game with a two-
point conversion, but the Pack defense came up with a big stop.
Wolfpack linebacker Terrell Manning sacked Yates in the end zone with 27
seconds on the clock for the game's final margin.
NC State has now won four straight in the head-to-head series with UNC.
