NCAA Game Summary - Boise State at Utah State
(Friday, November 20th)
Final Score: (6) Boise State 52, Utah State 21
Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Doug Martin scored four times on the ground as
part of a 323-yard rushing attack, as No. 6 Boise State recovered from a slow
start to rout Utah State, 52-21, in a Western Athletic Conference matchup from
Romney Stadium.
Jeremy Avery scored twice on the ground and gained 116 yards on 16 touches,
while Martin rushed 13 times for a career-high 122 yards.
Kellen Moore threw his Football Bowl Subdivision-leading 33rd touchdown this
season and finished 15-of-29 for 233 yards for the Broncos (11-0, 6-0 WAC),
who play a formidable Nevada team next Friday. The Wolf Pack are the only
other WAC competitor to sport an unblemished league record (6-0) and own a
hearty 7-3 record overall.
Titus Young totaled 231 yards from scrimmage and had an 80-yard rushing score
wiped out by a holding penalty. He was BSU's top receiving threat with 102
yards on five grabs.
The Broncos are now 11-0 for the third time in four seasons.
Michael Smith scored a pair of rushing TDs and Robert Turbin scored once on 14
carries for 61 yards.
Diondre Borel completed 18-of-30 passes for 201 yards with an interception for
the Aggies (3-8, 2-5), who managed to stop a two-game slide last Saturday
with a win over San Jose State.
With the game tied at 14, Boise State scored three times in the final 4:47
before halftime to take a 35-14 advantage.
The Broncos went 73 yards in four plays to answer an Aggies score, as Moore
connected with Young on a 51-yard completion and Martin took it in from two
yards out on the next play.
On Utah State's second play of its next series, Turbin fumbled it away to set
up the visitors at the opposing nine. On the first play, the Broncos had a
direct snap go to Martin, who went left and reversed the field with a handoff
to Avery for an easy nine-yard score.
The Aggies reached midfield on the ensuing possession but punted, and BSU
marched 83 yards in 10 plays, with Martin leaping from the one and stretching
over the goal line for a score with only five seconds left before the break.
Avery rushed through the right side for a 32-yard TD to cap Boise State's
opening possession of the second half to go up 42-14.
Utah State responded by sustaining a 75-yard scoring drive, thanks to a 10-
yard gain by Smith on a 4th-and-2 call early on. Smith then took it in from 12
yards away to make it a 42-21 game.
Kyle Brotzman dialed up a long distance 52-yard field goal late in the quarter
to give the visitors a 24-point advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Martin's final touchdown came on a six-yard run for the game's final points.
It was a 7-7 game after one quarter, as Moore hit Tommy Gallarda for an eight-
yard touchdown to complete Boise State's opening drive of the game.
Borel helped move the Aggies into scoring position on their next series with a
46-yard completion to Eric Moats, and Smith scored on a 22-yard run two plays
later just inside the left pylon.
Chris Ulinski missed on a 42-yard boot for Utah State on the third play of the
second quarter, and the Broncos converted a 54-yard drive into seven near the
nine-minute mark on Martin's 17-yard TD run.
The Aggies answered 2 1/2 minutes later on Turbin's 24-yard scoring run off
right tackle, as he danced just inside the pylon to knot the game at 14. Borel
helped move the ball downfield with completions of 15 and 14 yards on the 73-
yard drive.
