Cory Sykes led the ground game with 70 yards on 16 carries, but it was MiQuale Lewis who scored the lone offensive touchdown for Ball State. Lewis finished with 46 rushing yards for the Cardinals (2-10, 2-6 MAC), while Tanner Justice struggled under center, completing just 7-of-16 passes for 71 yards.

However, the quarterback was also intercepted four times. Jordan White was also busy in the contest, as the wideout hauled in 11 receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown. On the ground the Broncos were paced by Brandon West, who rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown.

The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter thanks to field goals by Ian McGarvey of 31 and 45 yards.

Ball State pushed its lead to 13-0 just seconds into the second stanza, as Lewis plunged into the end zone on a three-yard run.

Western Michigan cut its deficit to 13-10 by halftime, as the team received a 29-yard field goal by John Potter and a one-yard touchdown run by West.

The only points in the third frame came off the foot of McGarvey, who booted a 48-yard field goal midway through the quarter to give Ball State a 16-10 lead.

The Broncos took their first lead of the contest seconds into the final stanza, as Hiller hit White with a four-yard scoring strike.

However, Charlie Todd put the Cardinals back on top, 22-17, when he returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown.

Ball State was able to hold off Hiller and company for the remainder of the contest, en route to the victory.

Ball State was outgained in the contest, 463 to 226, but the Cardinals were able to force five turnovers in the matchup, which clearly was a big reason for the team's shocking win.
