Bowling Green, KY (Sports Network) - Moise Plancher carried 18 times for 115
yards and two scores, leading the South Florida Bulls to a 35-13 victory over
the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a non-conference tilt at L.T. Smith
USF (2-0) quarterback Matt Grothe threw for 208 yards and two TDs, while
adding another 53 yards on the ground. Carlton Mitchell caught four passes for
Brandon Smith paced WKU (0-2) with 105 rushing yards on 21 carries. But
Brandon Smith struggled under center, completing just 13-of-26 passes for 84
yards and an interception.
The Hilltoppers managed to draw first blood on a 40-yard field goal by Casey
Tinius midway through the first quarter.
But the Bulls answered with a nine-play, 83-yard drive, capped by Plancher's
one-yard touchdown plunge.
Grothe's 14-yard scoring strike to Theo Wilson made it a 14-3 game with 8:20
to play in the first half.
Tinius connected on a 31-yarder for WKU in the final minute of the half to
make it an eight-point game.
Late in the third quarter, Grothe got the Bulls offense going with a 65-yard
completion to Mitchell down to the WKU seven-yard line. On the very next play,
BJ Daniels scampered into the end zone.
But the Hilltoppers would not go away, as they put together a nine-play, 71-
yard drive, punctuated by Marell Booker's 15-yard touchdown run.
However, the fourth quarter belonged to USF. Grothe tossed a 17-yard touchdown
pass to Ben Busbee at the 11:26 mark, and Plancher iced the win with a 20-yard
touchdown run with six minutes to play.
As a team, the Bulls averaged a devastating 6.0 ypc on the ground.
