NCAA Game Summary - Ball State at Army

(Saturday, September 19th)

Final Score: Army 24, Ball State 17

West Point, NY (Sports Network) - Donovan Travis sealed a 24-17 win for Army over the Ball State Cardinals with a big fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown.

Travis' heroics compensated for a sluggish day for a Black Knights (2-1) offense that managed just 265 total yards. Trent Steelman threw for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Kingsley Ehie (15 carries, 67 yds) and Jameson Carter (14 carries, 57 yds, TD) paced Army's option attack.

Ball State (0-3) redshirt freshman quarterback Kelly Page (12-of-23, 154 yds, TD) was intercepted three times, one of which was returned 18 yards for the deciding touchdown with six minutes to play. Page was benched for the remainder of the game.

Army drove 80 yards in 13 plays on its opening drive, with Carter scoring on a one-yard run to give the Black Knights an early 7-0 lead.

Black Knights running back Alfred McDaniel lost a fumble deep in their own territory on Army's next possession. Two plays later, Page scampered loose for a 15-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7.

Army made it a 10-7 game on a 45-yard field goal by Alex Carlton at the 13:37 mark of the second quarter.

Midway through the same quarter, Ball State knotted the score on a 30-yard field goal by Ian McGarvey.

The Black Knights put together a 53-yard drive late in the half, and Steelman found Ali Villanueva for a 24-yard scoring strike with 1:21 remaining until halftime.

The Cardinals tied the score at 17-17 with less than 10 minutes to play in the third quarter, when Page hooked up with Torieal Gibson for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

However, Army defensive back Travis had the last laugh, as his fourth-quarter interception return proved to be the difference maker.

The Cardinals offense seemed to shut down after their game-tying touchdown in the third quarter. Their next four possessions resulted in two punts and two interceptions.
