Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Derrick Washington's one-yard fourth quarter
touchdown run gave Missouri its first and only lead of the game as the 25th-
ranked Tigers completed a 27-20 comeback win versus the Bowling Green
Falcons Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Missouri (2-0) trailed by as many as 13 points against the Falcons, but the
Tigers scored the final 21 points of the game. Bowling Green (1-1) had built a
20-6 lead early in the third quarter.
"I think we came out the second half," said Missouri receiver Wes Kemp. "We
started showing a little bit in the third quarter. But in the fourth quarter
the offense really started getting along."
The Falcons scored first with an 11-yard pass from Tyler Sheehan to Ray Hutson
with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Bowling Green came back after recovering
a Tiger fumble to lead 10-0 on a 37-yard field goal by Jerry Phillips with
1:45 remaining in the opening quarter.
Another fumble by Missouri in the second quarter gave the Falcons another
chance to score. Bowling Green drove to the Tigers 14-yard line and Phillips
was able to connect on a 32-yard field goal with 12:14 left in the first
Missouri closed the first half scoring with a pair of field goals by Grant
Ressel and Bowling Green went into the locker room leading 13-6.
The Falcons' final points came with 9:44 remaining in the third quarter when
Willie Geter scored from one-yard out to put the visitors ahead 20-6. Geter
finished the game with 20 carries, 99 yards and one touchdown.
With under a minute to play in the third quarter Missouri's Blaine Gabbert hit
Jared Perry with a 27-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-13. For the
game Perry grabbed six passes for 55 yards and one score.
In the fourth quarter Gabbert connected with Wes Kemp on a 33-yard touchdown
to tie the game 20-20 with 10:15 remaining. Gabbert ended with 172 yards on 20
of 33 passing and two scores.
Washington's game-winning touchdown came with 5:38 left as the running back
finished with 120 yards on the ground on 23 carries.
"I don't want to say that our guys let down," said Bowling Green head coach
Dave Clawson. "But Missouri executed better than we did from that point on, so
credit to them. But our guys didn't let down, Missouri just made some plays."
Tyler Sheehan finished with 206 yards while completing 29-of-46 attempts and
Missouri will host Furman next Saturday and Bowling Green will travel to
Danario Alexander of Missouri had seven catches for 56 yards and Kemp
finished with 38 yards on two receptions. Freddie Barnes led the Falcons with
10 catches and 70 yards, Chris Wright caught seven passes for 57 yards and Ray
Hutson had five catches for 49 yards. Bowling Green has won three of five
meetings with Missouri.
