Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Bryant Moniz threw for 366 yards and three
touchdowns as he and the Hawaii Warriors defeated the Navy Midshipmen, 24-17,
in non-conference action at Aloha Stadium.
Moniz converted 32-of-44 passes for the Warriors (6-6) as they remained in the
hunt for a postseason invitation. Greg Salas collected 10 passes for 147 yards
and Kealoha Pilares eight balls for 102 yards and a pair of scores as well.
The Midshipmen were paced by Ricky Dobbs who gained a game-high 127 yards and
scored once on 25 rushing attempts. Dobbs also converted 5-of-9 passes for 88
yards in the setback.
Pilares began the game's scoring late in the first quarter when he caught a
24-yard TD pass from Moniz to make the score 7-0.
However, the ensuing possession by Navy covered 63 yards on only three plays
as Dobbs raced 53 yards to the end zone to lock the score at 7-7 at the end of
the first period of play.
Hawaii kicker Scott Enos put his team back out in front in the second when he
booted a 34-yard field goal, but Navy responded with a 28-yard field goal by
Joe Buckley. With 1:07 remaining in the first half Vince Murray put the
Midshipmen up by a score of 17-10 on the strength of his 18-yard TD run.
With six seconds to play in the opening half Pilares and Moniz hooked up once
more on a seven-yard scoring strike to knot the score at 17-17 heading into
The only points of the second half came courtesy of a 14-yard TD pass from
Moniz to Alex Green late in the third.
Desperate down the stretch, Dobbs tried to pass the ball down the field for
Navy, but he was taken down for a sack on the final play of the game.
Hawaii, one of the weakest running teams in the nation again this season,
logged just 62 yards on the ground, but overall the Warriors still gained more
total yards than the visitors (428 to 336).
