Toledo, OH (Sports Network) - Tim Hiller completed 16-of-26 pass attempts for
270 yards and three scores to lead the Western Michigan Broncos to a 58-26 win
over the Toledo Rockets in a Mid-American Conference tussle at the Glass Bowl.
Jordan White was Hiller's favorite target, hauling in five passes for 117
yards and two touchdowns. Brandon West led the Broncos (3-2, 2-1 MAC) rushing
attack, carrying the ball 14 times for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
True freshman Austin Dantin paced Toledo (3-3,1-1), completing 17-of-28 passes
for 160 yards and three scores. He did a good job stepping in for starter
Aaron Opelt, who left the game with a shoulder injury in the second quarter.
WMU scored on its first play from scrimmage, when Hiller hooked up with White
from 54 yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Hiller and White hooked up again on the following possession, this time from
19 yards out to make it a 14-0 game.
The Broncos got back on the board on their next possession, when West threw a
12-yard touchdown pass to Juan Nunez. The extra point was missed, giving WMU a
Toledo answered on its next possession with a 21-yard field goal by Alex
The Rockets made it a 20-6 game late in the first quarter with a 40-yard field
goal by Steigerwald.
WMU regained control in the second quarter, as West ripped off a 15-yard
touchdown run in the opening seconds of the stanza.
Hiller led his team to another score on its next possession, finding Nunez
from two yards out to make it a 34-6 contest.
The Broncos added another touchdown late in the first half, as West scored
on a 19-yard touchdown run to make it 41-6.
The Rockets finally responded, scoring on the final play of the first half
when Dantin found Eric Page for a six-yard touchdown pass. The two-point
attempt failed, forcing Toledo to enter the locker room trailing 41-12 at the
WMU got right back to work in the third quarter, as West took the second play
from scrimmage 70 yards for the score.
The Broncos extended their lead to 51-12 midway through the third quarter on
a 37-yard field goal by John Potter
In the closing minute of the third quarter, Dantin hooked up with Stephen
Williams from 18 yards out to make it a 51-19 contest.
Toledo scored the first points of the fourth quarter, when Dantin and Matt
Shumaker connected from eight yards out for the score.
WMU put the final touches on an impressive win late in the fourth quarter,
as Glenis Thompson scored on a 29-yard touchdown run to seal the 58-26
The Broncos dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing for 252 yards in the win.
