at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Pryor completed 17-of-28 passes for 262 yards with a pair of interceptions and
also ran for 110 yards on 12 carries for the Buckeyes (2-1), who bounced back
with a strong effort after last week's 18-15 loss to Southern California and
did not get caught looking ahead to next week's Big Ten opener against
Two of Pryor's scoring tosses went to Dane Sanzenbacher, including a 76-yard
play for the first touchdown. Sanzenbacher finished with five catches for a
career-high 126 yards.
Aaron Opelt threw for 197 yards on 22-of-45 passing for Toledo (1-2), which
was coming off a 54-38 victory over Colorado last week. The Rockets opened
their season with a 52-31 loss to Big Ten foe Purdue.
Ohio State outgained Toledo 522-210 overall and held the Rockets to just 13
yards on the ground.
After Toledo went three-and-out to start the game, Ohio State took a 7-0 lead
on its third offensive play as Pryor hooked up with Sanzenbacher on a 76-yard
catch and run for a touchdown.
Toledo again failed to produce a first down on its next possession and Pryor
directed a 12-play, 68-yard march for another touchdown. The sophomore
converted a pair of third downs with a two-yard run and a 12-yard pass, then
completed the drive with an 18-yard seam pass for a score to Sanzenbacher.
The Rockets finally picked up a first down on their next series, but soon
after punted. Pryor was then picked off on a deep pass inside the Toledo 10,
but the Buckeyes got the ball back quickly on another three-and-out and took
advantage of good position near midfield to increase their lead. Dan Herron
capped a 47-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run just 2 1/2 minutes into
the second quarter for a 21-0 cushion.
Neither team mustered another threat until the final few minutes of the half,
when Ohio State drove inside the Toledo five. The Rockets held and forced a
21-yard field goal attempt that Aaron Pettrey clanged off the left upright.
The Buckeyes got the ball right back and Pettrey nailed a 47-yard try as time
Pryor keyed Ohio State's second possession of the third quarter with a 43-yard
run on 3rd-and-8, then added completions of 19 and 15 yards before finishing
the 86-yard march with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 31-0.
Toledo finally had a good chance to reach the scoreboard when Pryor's next
pass on OSU's ensuing possession was intercepted. The Rockets took over at the
Ohio State 37, but went backward and had to punt.
The next Toledo possession reached the Ohio State 27 early in the fourth
quarter, but Eric Page fumbled after a reception and Kurt Coleman recovered
in the end zone for the Buckeyes, who followed with an 80-yard drive for a
touchdown. Pryor hit DeVier Posey for four yards to complete the 11-play
series, giving Ohio State a 38-0 lead with 7:10 to play.
Toledo drove to the Ohio State 34, but a sack on third down forced a punt and
Opelt was picked off on the next Rockets possession with just over a minute to
play to seal the shutout.
