Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Bernard Pierce rushed for 125 yards and
two touchdowns to lead the Temple Owls to a 24-19 victory over the Ball State
Cardinals in a Mid-American Conference collision at Lincoln Financial Field.
Vaughn Charlton threw for 186 yards and one touchdown in the win for Temple
(3-2, 3-0 MAC), which has won three consecutive games.
As for the Cardinals (0-6, 0-2), they were led by Kelly Page, who threw for
237 yards and two touchdowns. However, the signal caller also tossed two
interceptions and was sacked five times in the loss.
Midway through the first quarter the Owls took a 3-0 lead when Brandon McManus
connected on a 27-yard field goal.
Minutes later Temple extended its lead to 10-0 when Charlton hit James Nixon
with a 28-yard touchdown pass.
Neither team could muster any points in the second frame, leaving the Owls
with a 10-0 advantage at halftime.
The Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter when
Torieal Gibson caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Page.
Ball State took the lead minutes later thanks to the defense, as Eric Williams
recovered a fumble in the endzone. Unfortunately the extra point failed,
leaving the Cardinals with a 13-10 edge.
Temple regained the lead later in the third frame when Pierce scored on a two-
Pierce struck again late in the final frame, as the tailback scored on a
three-yard run, pushing the Owls advantage to 24-13.
Page connected with Daniel Ifft for a two-yard touchdown as time expired in
regulation, but even with the late score the Cardinals fell by a five-point
