Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Scott Tolzien threw for 243 yards and four
touchdowns, as the Wisconsin Badgers took care of the Michigan State Spartans,
38-30, in the Big Ten opener for both programs at Camp Randall Stadium.
Badgers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) tight end Garrett Graham caught three of those
touchdown passes, finishing with 58 yards on five catches. Meanwhile, John
Clay powered the run game with 32 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown.
MSU (1-3, 0-1) quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol combined for four
touchdown passes, though they also threw three costly interceptions in the
loss. Keshawn Martin headlined the Spartans offense with 139 yards and two
touchdowns on four catches.
Wisconsin got on the board with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Tolzien to
Graham late in the first quarter, which was set up by a Cousins interception
Cousins redeemed himself with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mark Dell to knot
the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter.
But the Badgers regained the lead on a six-yard touchdown pass from Tolzien to
Graham with just under nine minutes to play in the first half.
Nichol was intercepted on the third play of the Spartans' ensuing drive, which
eventually set up a one-yard touchdown run by Clay to push Wisconsin's lead to
Michigan State kicker Brett Swenson and Wisconsin kicker Philip Welch traded
field goals in the third quarter, as Wisconsin still enjoyed a 14-point lead
with about 19 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Spartans' cut the deficit to seven on a 20-yard touchdown pass from
Cousins to B.J. Cunningham late in the third quarter.
But Tolzien answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Nick Toon on the first
play of the fourth quarter.
The Badgers lost a fumble on their next possession, and Tolzien again made
them pay with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Graham to make it a 38-17 game with
12 minutes remaining.
Nichol tightened up the final margin with a pair of touchdown passes to Martin
(15, 91) in the final two minutes.
The Spartans out-gained the Badgers in total offense (486-436), but Wisconsin
scored 21 points off four Michigan State turnovers.
