NCAA Game Summary - U-C-L-A at Tennessee

(Saturday, September 12th)

Final Score: UCLA 19, Tennessee 15

Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Kai Forbath converted four field goals to lead the UCLA Bruins to an exciting 19-15 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in non-conference action at Neyland Stadium.

Forbath, who missed a 51-yard effort at the end of the second quarter, was the star of the game for the Bruins (2-0), while quarterback Kevin Prince converted 11-of-23 passing for 101 yards and a touchdown in the win.

The Volunteers (1-1), under the direction of new head coach Lane Kiffin, decided to stick with just one quarterback in the contest as Jonathan Crompton converted just 13-of-26 passing for a mere 93 yards, was intercepted three times and sacked just as many times in the home loss for Tennessee.

Capping a 10-play, 51-yard drive to start the contest, Forbath converted his first field goal of the afternoon early in the first quarter, a 26-yarder to put the visitors up by three.

UT responded with a field goal of its own, a 31-yard kick by Daniel Lincoln to knot the score with 5:07 remaining in the opening frame.

An 11-yard TD run by Montario Hardesty put the Vols ahead 10-3 heading into the second period.

Prince then hit Chane Moline with a 12-yard scoring strike, accounting for the only points of the second quarter, which led to a 10-10 tie at the break.

Forbath put all nine points on the board in the third quarter for UCLA with successful kicks from 39, 31 and 47 yards away, giving the visitors a 19-10 advantage heading into the final period.

Lincoln was forced to come back on for the Volunteers when their next possession stalled after 17 plays and 69 yards, the kicker responding by knocking through a 28-yard field goal to make the score 19-13.

A safety, logged by Tennessee when Dennis Rogan sacked Prince in the end zone, closed the gap to 19-15 with just under two minutes remaining, but that was as close as the home team would get as Crompton suffered a sack of his own and threw three incomplete passes on the ensuing possession.

Offense was at a premium on Saturday in Knoxville as the Bruins generated a victory with just 186 yards and the Vols managed only 208 yards on 70 offensive plays.
