Stampeders roll behind near perfect Mitchell

Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 376 yards and a trio of majors Friday night to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 37-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Investors Group Field.

Mitchell completed 29-of-33 passes, with Marquay McDaniel, Gregg Carr and Anthony Parker each hauling in a score to help the Stampeders (4-1) take their eighth straight meeting with the Blue Bombers.

Jon Cornish carried the ball 16 times for 88 yards, while kicker Rene Paredes connected on all five of his field goal attempts to make CFL history. Paredes has now made 34 consecutive field goals, surpassing Paul McCallum's mark of 30 straight field goals set in 2011.

Justin Goltz got the start under center for the Blue Bombers (1-4) and finished 19-of-35 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Chad Simpson rushed 13 times for 73 yards and a major, while Jade Etienne added a pair of receiving scores in the setback, Winnipeg's third in a row.

Calgary's first possession produced a single, while their second ended in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Carr, who hauled in the score in the right side of the end zone to give the Stampeders an 8-0 advantage.

Winnipeg answered on its ensuing touch, as a 40-yard reception by Rory Kohlert highlighted a lengthy drive that Goltz capped with a 5-yard touchdown toss to Etienne to bring the Blue Bombers within one.

After a two-and-out from Calgary, Goltz led his squad down the field, connecting on all four passes on the trek, including a 7-yard scoring strike to Etienne on a quick slant route to make it 14-8 Winnipeg.

Paredes poured in three more field goals over the final seven-plus minutes of the second half, with the final one breaking McCallum's mark and sending the Stamps into the break with a 17-14 edge.

Calgary came out of the locker room with another scoring drive that culminated in Mitchell's 15-yard touchdown pass to Parker before Paredes added a 33-yard field goal later in the third to make it 27-14 Stampeders.

Justin Palardy knocked down a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth to bring Winnipeg within 10, but Calgary quickly answered, as Keon Raymond returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards before Mitchell found McDaniel for a 10-yard major to make it 34-17.

Paredes capped his perfect night with a 23-yard field goal late in the fourth before Simpson scored from two yards out with under 90 seconds left to account for the final margin.

Game Notes
