GAME NOTES: Coming off their first loss of the season, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday when the Morehead State Eagles come to town for a non-conference matchup at Reed Green Coliseum.

Morehead State will be trying to build off a 74-69 triumph over Wright State earlier this week. The victory over the Raiders was the third in the last four games for the Eagles, who own a 7-3 overall mark. That includes a 3-2 record as the visiting team. The Eagles are back at home against Bowling Green next time out.

After sprinting out to a 6-0 start, the Golden Eagles visited No. 7 Louisville over the weekend. Southern Miss didn't fare well in that matchup as they were easily blown away in a 69-38 decision. Southern Miss, which has won its first two home games, will host Georgia State when it next hits the floor.

Last year Southern Miss was the visitor when these teams met, yet still ran away with a 94-58 triumph. Morehead State now leads the all-time series, 5-2.

Despite being outscored 24-3 from beyond the arc, Morehead State was able to dispatch of Wright State. The difference for the Eagles was up front as they owned a 39-27 advantage on the boards and also outscored the Raiders, 44-30 in the paint.

Winning the battle on the boards has been a strength for Morehead State. The Eagles own a +8.5 advantage on the glass and are also scoring a healthy 78.7 points per game on an even 45 percent success rate on field goal attempts. Angelo Warner (17.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.7 spg) is a versatile guard that fills up the box score across the board. Against Wright State he scored 19 points, handed out eight assists, brought in seven rebounds and also grabbed four steals. Chad Posthumus (12.5 ppg, 11 rpg) is a strong anchor down low as he is a constant threat for a double-double. Brent Arrington (11.8 ppg) is a complementary scorer in the backcourt.

It was a brutal night for Southern Miss in their rout to Louisville. The Golden Eagles only hit 28.9 percent of their attempts from the floor while turning the ball over 22 times. Michael Craig scored nine points as no player on the team was able to reach double figures.

Although they have not been an overly potent offensive bunch, the Golden Eagles' performance against the Cardinals was clearly a big step back. On the campaign Southern Miss is scoring 68.9 points per game, while shooting at a respectable 45.6 percent from the floor. Not having a long list of double figurer scorers was only a problem against Louisville, as the Golden Eagles haven't had that benefit at all this season and are still 6-1. Aaron Brown (10.7 pg) is the only member of the team scoring in double figures, though four others are putting in at least 8.9 points per game. Craig (9.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Neil Watson (9.7 ppg) are the next best options.

The Eagles are clearly the more efficient offensive team in this matchup. However, the Golden Eagles have shown strong efforts on the defensive end, allowing just 61.7 points per game. If Southern Miss can keep Warner under control, it can stop Morehead State.
