GAME NOTES: Instate foes will be matched up on Sunday afternoon at the Holmes Center as the Charlotte 49ers take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers in non-conference action.

The 49ers are attempting to bounce back from their first loss since mid- November in this game. Charlotte hosted Davidson on Wednesday and fell short in overtime, 87-78. The loss ended a five-game win streak for the 49ers, which included a 63-61 victory over a ranked Michigan squad. Charlotte goes up against Florida State next.

Appalachian State has not enjoyed nearly as much success as the 49ers but is coming into play off a win. The victory occurred on Wednesday but came against a non-Division I foe in North Greenville (78-70). The Mountaineers' other win on the season also came against a team from outside the Division I ranks as it topped Lees-McRae on Nov. 19. Appalachian State will be off until next Sunday when it faces Winthrop in the front end of a two-game road swing.

In 33 all-time meetings, the 49ers have collected 20 wins. However, Appalachian State won the most recent affair, an 87-84 triumph during the 2008-09 season.

There were 12 ties during regulation for Charlotte against Davidson, the last coming when Willie Clayton nailed a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left to pull the 49ers even at 74-74. The extra session did not go Charlotte's way though as it hit just 1-of-7 tries from the field to surrender the decision.

Only seven players got into the action for the 49ers in that loss as they were hobbled by injuries. Pierria Henry (12.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 5.9 apg, 2.6 spg) is an extremely valuable player, but he missed the game due to a injured knee. Although he is listed as questionable for this contest, he is expected to play. When healthy Henry gives the 49ers a litany of scoring options as six different players are averaging in double figures. Shawn Lester (15 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is the top scoring option and the only player that really sees much action off the bench. Willie Clayton (12.1 ppg, 10.6 rpg) is a handful in the frontcourt.

Appalachian State actually trailed against North Greenville by 10 points in the second half. However, a 14-4 run over the next eight minutes allowed the Mountaineers to take their own 10-point advantage. Mike Neal poured in 21 of his 27 points during the final 20 minutes.

Normally, Tevin Baskin (15.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg) is the player lighting up the scoreboard at a prolific rate for the Mountaineers. Baskin still turned in a strong performance against North Greenville as he scored 19 points and collected six rebounds. However, he only netted 5-of-14 from the floor, relying on nine points from the free-throw line to account for the majority of his points. Neal (12.3 ppg) is the only other player on the roster scoring in double figures. Tab Hamilton (9.9 ppg) has the potential to score but by shooting just 34.2 percent from the field, has not been consistent.

Getting Henry back in the fold at any capacity just boosts the advantage in this game for a 49ers squad that has too many weapons to fall to the Mountaineers.
