GAME NOTES: The Pirates of East Carolina invite the Tulane Green Wave for a Conference-USA showdown at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
The Green Wave are coming off 78-66 loss at Tulsa. It was the second loss in a row for Tulane which had won four of the previous five games. This is the second of a two-game road swing for the Green Wave before hosting Houston to close out the regular season.
The Pirates most recently suffered an 88-69 loss at Southern Miss which spoiled a potential 3-0 road trip for ECU. This meeting is the first of a two- game homestand for ECU as it nears the end of the regular season.
Tulane leads the all-time series between these teams, 9-6. Although the Green Wave hold the edge, its the Pirates who have won the past four meetings with a 66-49 win last March.
Maurice Kemp supplied 23 points and eight rebounds in the loss to the Golden Eagles. Akeem Richmond added 15 points while Miguel Paul ha 13 points and eight assists. The Pirates allowed Southern Miss to shoot over 50.0 percent from the floor while knocking down an incredible 13-of-20 shots from long- range. They were also outrebounded 42-23.
Kemp has been outstanding this season, averaging 18.0 ppg with 7.7 rpg while shooting over 50.0 percent from the field. Paul adds 12.8 ppg and over 6.5 apg while Richmond manages 10.5 ppg with over 45.0 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Pirates are very tough offensively, scoring 76.4 ppg on nearly 45.0 percent shooting from the floor.
In the win over Tulsa, Josh Davis and Ricky Tarrant scored 16 points each while Tarrant dished out five assists to lead the team. Although the Green Wave shot just 30.0 percent from the field in the game, their 16-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line in the first half allowed them to hold a huge 43-23 lead at the break which proved too much for Tulsa to overcome.
Tulane has three players averaging in double-figure scoring this season led by Davis who averages a double-double with 17.2 ppg and 10.2 rpg. Davis shoots nearly 45.0 percent from the field. Tarrant scores 16.4 ppg and Jordan Callahan adds 10.7 ppg but both players shoot well below 40.0 percent from the field and grab less than 3.0 rpg each.
ECU has a high-powered offense and will look to get it going on its home court. The Pirates will try to bounce back strong from that road loss with a solid home crowd to please as the season unwinds.
