GAME NOTES: The Texas Longhorns will conclude their Big 12 regular season on Saturday by playing on the road against a struggling Texas Tech squad.
This is a series Texas has dominated. The Longhorns have won nine in a row and 16 of the last 17 meetings. Texas is 28-3 against Texas Tech under Rick Barnes, including a 13-2 mark in Lubbock.
This will mark the second time brothers Connor Lammert, a freshman forward for Texas, and Clark Lammert, a sophomore forward for Texas Tech will meet. In the season's first encounter, a 73-57 result on Jan. 26, Julien Lewis had 18 points for the Longhorns, which limited the Red Raiders to 37 percent shooting.
The Longhorns are coming off a 79-70 home win over Baylor on Monday. Sheldon McClellan scored a game-high 23 points off the bench. McClellan knocked down 9-of-14 shots from the floor, including 3-of-6 beyond the arc, in 26 minutes of action. Also scoring in double figures for the hosts were Myck Kabongo and Ioannis Papapetrou with 19 and 18 points, respectively, the former adding eight assists and six rebounds as well.
Kabongo leads the Longhorns at 17 points per game. McClellan (13.7 ppg) has made 29 of his last 30 free throw attempts. He came off the bench in Monday's game. Lewis (10.2 ppg) is also in double figures.
The Red Raiders couldn't build on a 9-point home win over TCU from Saturday and lost 79-42 at Kansas Monday night. Jordan Tolbert had 16 points and was the only player in double figures for the Red Raiders, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Texas Tech was limited to 26.4 percent shooting from the field, including 1-of-15 from 3-point range.
Jaye Crockett is the leading scorer on the Red Raiders at 11.8 points per game and also paces the team with 6.8 rebounds, although he usually comes off the bench. Tolbert (9.7 ppg), Josh Gray (9.5 ppg) and Dejan Kravic (8.5 ppg) are part of the starting lineup. Crockett is shooting 50.2 percent from the field and his 6.8 rebounds per game are the most for a Texas Tech player since Andy Ellis in 2002.
Should the Red Raiders win today, they'll face the Longhorns in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. The Red Raiders have the No. 9 seed and will play either the Longhorns or West Virginia.
Texas is 32-4 against the Red Raiders since the Big 12 began in 1996-97. It's been hit or miss most of the season for the Longhorns, but they're certainly a step above the Red Raiders, a team that hasn't won its regular-season finale since 2007.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas 79, Texas Tech 71
