Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Dwight Powell scored a career-high 27 points as he led the Stanford Cardinal to a 74-62 win over the San Francisco Dons in season-opening play at Oracle Arena.
Powell scored 18 of his points in the second half for the Cardinal (1-0), but he left the floor late in the period with an apparent knee injury. Josh Huestis contributed 11 points and cleared a team-best nine rebounds for a Stanford squad that has now won 23 of the last 25 season openers.
Pacing the Dons (0-1) were Avry Holmes with 17 points off the bench, followed by De'End Parker and Cole Dickerson who recorded 13 and 11 points, respectively. Dickerson pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds, but at the same time was guilty of five turnovers and shot just 4-of-15 from the floor.
USF moved out to an early lead in the first half and shot 6-of-14 from three- point range, yet it was Stanford with a slight 32-31 edge at the break.
In the second half the Dons dropped to just 1-of-6 on the perimeter and 11- of-31 shooting from the floor overall, allowing the Cardinal to run away with the double-digit victory.
Stanford was beaten on the glass rather soundly, 45-29, but the squad made up for it by suffering just six turnovers on the night.
