Abrams, Longhorns open season with big win over Stetson

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - A.J. Abrams scored 21 points to lead the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns to a season-opening 68-38 blowout of the Stetson Hatters at the Erwin Center.

Abrams was 7-of-12 from the floor and had five of his field goals come from beyond the arc for the Longhorns (1-0), who won a school-record 31 games and earned a tie for the Big 12 regular-season crown with Kansas a season ago.

In the end though, Texas was defeated by Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament title game and downed by Memphis in the Elite Eight.

Connor Atchley logged 14 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 shooting with three triples while Damion James collected 13 points and seven boards in the win.

A.J. Smith led the way with 12 points and Garfield Blair chipped in 10 for Stetson (0-1), which last season won 11 league outings for the first time since 1986-87 and finished .500 (16-16) for the first time since 2000-01.

Tim Lang gathered a game-high eight rebounds in the loss.

The Hatters shot a dismal 21.7 percent from the field in the first half as Texas posted a 29-18 halftime lead.

The Longhorns jumped out to a 16-5 advantage and led 22-7 before the Hatters took a timeout with 6 1/2 minutes to play. An Abrams jumper extended the lead 1:15 later before Stetson closed the half on an 11-5 run.

While the Hatters improved on their first half with 20 points on 29.6 percent shooting, Texas kicked into another gear with 39 second-half points en route to the easy victory.
