Jeff Jones named coach at Old Dominion

Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - Old Dominion named Jeff Jones the new head coach of its men's basketball program on Thursday.

Jones joins the Monarchs after a 13-year stint at American University, during which he compiled a 212-182 record and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. Four of his last six teams won at least 20 games, but the Eagles finished with just 10 wins this past season.

"We were extremely fortunate to speak with some great candidates, all of whom could have successfully led the program. Jeff Jones, however, in my opinion, had the best plan to move Old Dominion basketball forward as we transition to Conference USA," ODU president John R. Broderick said in a statement.

Prior to his run at American, Jones went 146-104 at Virginia from 1990-98. He led the Cavaliers to six postseason appearances, winning the NIT championship in 1992 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Elite 8 in 1995.

"I have immense respect for Jeff Jones and his ability to lead a highly successful Division I men's basketball program," Old Dominion athletic director Dr. Wood Selig said in a statement. "Coach Jones is one of the most respected head basketball coaches in the country. His head coaching career has been characterized by winning seasons and successful postseason play."

Jones replaces Blaine Taylor, who was fired in February.
