(Friday, November 11th)
Final Score: Virginia Military 103, The Citadel 100
USAFA, CO (Sports Network) - Stan Okoye scored 19 points, leading six players in double figures, as the Keydets of Virginia Military held on for a 103-100 win over The Citadel Bulldogs as part of the All-Military Classic at Clune Arena.
Rodney Glasgow and Keith Gabriel both tallied 17 points for the Keydets (1-0), while reserve Jordan Weethee checked in with 15 points in just 15 minutes off the bench. Nick Gore chipped in 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Ron Burks tallied 11 points.
The Bulldogs (0-1) were paced by Mike Groselle who recorded a double-double consisting of 25 points and 11 rebounds as he shot 9-of-12 from the floor. Lawrence Miller accounted for 14 points off the bench after hitting 4-of-5 behind the three-point line, Barry Smith and Ashton Moore accounted for 12 points apiece and Marshall Harris III dropped in 11 points and handed out nine assists in the losing effort.
VMI, which led the nation in scoring again last season, established a fast tempo that allowed the squad to take 40 shots from the floor in the first half, knocking down 18 attempts en route to a 52-46 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Keydets extended their lead as high as 15 points, but down the stretch The Citadel closed the gap and drew to within two points at 102-100 thanks to a three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining, but that's as close as the Bulldogs would get in the three-point decision.
One of the most aggressive three-point shooting teams in Division I the last several seasons, VMI connected on just 7-of-26 shots beyond the arc on the night.
The Keydets are now set to clash with Air Force in the championship game on Saturday, while The Citadel takes on Army in the third-place game.
