GAME NOTES: The fifth-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders host the eighth-seeded Jacksonville Dolphins in the second round of the NIT today at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. The winner of this matchup moves on to the quarterfinals against the Memphis/Ole Miss winner on Tuesday.
In their first NIT appearance since placing third in 2003, the Red Raiders dominated fourth-seeded Seton Hall for an 87-69 victory on the road this past Tuesday. It is just the second win in the past 10 games for TTU, which now returns home, where it has gone a perfect 10-0 against non-conference foes this season.
As for the Dolphins, they pulled off the NIT's biggest upset so far, knocking off top-seeded Arizona State, 67-66, in dramatic fashion on Tuesday. It marked the first postseason win since 1974 for Jacksonville, which is now 6-6 all- time in this event.
Jacksonville is a perfect 2-0 all-time against TTU, with the most recent meeting coming in 1981.
Ben Smith drained a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining, as Jacksonville closed the game on an 18-6 run for a 67-66 win over Arizona State on Tuesday. Smith finished the game 4-of-11 from long range on his way to 26 points and five assists. Ayron Hardy posted 11 points and eight rebounds, while Lehmon Colbert registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. For the season, Smith averages a healthy 19.8 ppg to pace Jacksonville and he also distributes 3.7 apg. The only other double-figure scorer for the Dolphins is Colbert, who turns in 12.0 ppg and a team-best 7.0 rpg.
The Raiders made good on 50.0 percent of their attempts from the floor and held Seton Hall to a dismal 35.4 percent shooting effort, as they scored an 87-69 win on Tuesday. John Roberson led the charge with 22 points and four assists, while Mike Singletary logged 13 points and six rebounds. D'walyn Roberts and Darko Cohadarevic each chipped in 12 points and the duo combined for 20 rebounds as well. On the season, Roberson tops the roster in scoring at 14.8 ppg and he also dishes off a team-high 5.5 apg. Singletary adds 14.7 ppg and a team-high 6.8 rpg to the mix, while Nick Okorie tacks on 11.0 ppg.
Texas Tech has a big advantage hosting this game and its high-powered attack should help in defeating Jacksonville today.
