Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Ben Smith drilled a three-point basket with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the Jacksonville Dolphins to a thrilling, 67-66 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in the first round of the NIT at Wells-Fargo Arena.
Smith finished with 26 points and five assists for Jacksonville (20-12), while Ayron Hardy added 11 points and eight boards. Lehmon Colbert posted a double- double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for Jacksonville, which will now battle Texas Tech in the second round of the NIT.
Rihards Kuksiks netted 21 points for Arizona State (22-11), while Ty Abbott tallied 15 points. Eric Boateng and Jamelle McMillan tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss.
The Sun Devils went into the break with a 28-24 lead after holding Jacksonville to a meager 28.6 percent shooting effort from the floor in the first half.
The Dolphins stormed back in the second stanza however, as they shot 60.0 percent from the field, en route to the amazing victory.
Jacksonville shot 41.7 percent in the contest and finished 12-of-17 from the foul line.
