Mountaineers smash Coppin State

Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Kevin Jones finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, as sixth-ranked West Virginia stayed unbeaten with a 69-43 victory over Coppin State.

Da'Sean Butler had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Mountaineers (7-0), who won despite not shooting well from any part of the floor. West Virginia made just under 40 percent of its shots, including 4-of-26 three-point attempts and 19-of-34 free throws.

However, the Mountaineers forced 20 turnovers and limited Coppin State (5-4) to just 40 shots.

Vince Goldsberry had 12 points to pace the Eagles, who were coming off an overtime victory against Loyola-Maryland on Wednesday. Lenny Young added 11 points in the setback.

In a back-and-forth game, two free throws from Quinston Reggins gave Coppin State a 13-11 edge nearly midway through the first half. But Jones responded with a layup to spark a 12-0 West Virginia run.

Butler made 4-of-4 free throws during the stretch, and Jones closed it with two layups to make it a 23-13 game with just under six minutes left.

Darryl Bryant's layup capped the first-half scoring to give WVU a 33-19 lead at the break, and the Mountaineers used a five-point burst early in the second half to push the advantage to 38-21 a little under two minutes in.

The Eagles trimmed their deficit to 41-29 moments later after scoring six straight points, but they went nearly four minutes without another point. West Virginia ran off seven points in that same stretch, taking a 48-29 lead on two Bryant free throws, and led comfortably in the final 12 minutes.
