Tar Heels down Panthers; Williams gets 500th win
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Tyler Hansbrough's 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting led third-ranked North Carolina over High Point, 94-69 at the Smith Center.
Brandan Wright, Reyshawn Terry and Ty Lawson scored 11 apiece, and Marcus Ginyard added 10 for North Carolina (7-1), winners of four straight games.
Arizona Reid piled up a game-high 26 points to go with eight rebounds, and Mike Jefferson contributed 14 points for High Point (6-4), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
The victory was a milestone for Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams, who won his 500th career game. He reached the 500-win mark in his 19th season, faster than any other Division-I coach. Jerry Tarkanian was the former record-setter, winning his 500th game in his 20th season.
Williams improved to 82-24 in his fourth season at North Carolina. He was 418-101 in 15 seasons at Kansas.
"It was a nice night," Williams said. "It was, in some way, a difficult game with the team in exams. Some of the guys have been off. We have been practicing sort of controlled and sort of cut short, but this is what you have during exam period."
Though clearly overmatched, the Panthers played the Tar Heels to a 10-10 tie 6 1/2 minutes into the contest, but North Carolina broke away on a 15-2 run and seized control of the game. Hansbrough's dunk and Lawson's layup bookended the charge.
Danny Green's jumper with 1:43 to go, gave North Carolina a 39-26 lead, highlighting an 11-2 burst at the end of the half, which saw the Tar Heels in control, 45-28 at halftime.
In the second half, North Carolina kicked it into high gear and maintained full control throughout, never letting High Point get closer than 13 points.
Hansborough's make with 6:24 to go provided the Tar Heels with a comfortable 78-60 lead, and High Point could hold on no longer.
"He's just so strong, and the thing that makes him special is that he keeps turning you until he gets and angle," High Point head coach Bart Lundy of Hansborough. "We worked really hard on not giving him angles, but it's almost impossible not to give him an angle."
UNC expanded their advantage to as many as 26 points on two occasions late in the half and cruised to the easy win.
North Carolina is a perfect 8-0 in the all-time series...Neither team shot well from three-point range, as High Point made just 6-of-24, and North Carolina only 4-of-13...The Tar Heels won the battle of the boards, 43-25...High Point fell to 2-24 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference teams...The schools are located about 65 miles apart, but met for the first time since 1947.
