Patroons take GW's Thompson first in CBA Draft

Boise, ID (Sports Network) - The expansion Albany Patroons made George Washington University's T.J. Thompson the first overall selection in the 20th annual Continental Basketball Association college draft Tuesday.

"First of all, he�s a great kid," said Albany coach Michael Ray Richardson. "He's a great offensive player and he will bring a level of excitement to the CBA. He's a scoring machine."

Thompson, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound guard, led the Colonials to their first Atlantic 10 Championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance last season. He averaged 13.6 points per game in 2004-05 and made a team-high 74 three- pointers.

The Gary Steelheads selected West Virginia center D'Or Fischer second overall. Alan Anderson (F, Michigan State) went third to the Michigan Mayhem. Omar Thomas (G, UTEP) went to the Yakama Sun Kings. The Idaho Stampede took Quemont Greer (F, DePaul) fifth, the Rockford Lightning selected Ryan Edwards (Missouri Baptist) sixth, Stephen Graham (F, Oklahoma State) was selected seventh by the Sioux Falls Skyforce, who also had the eighth selection and chose Alfred Neale (G, New Mexico). Chuck Hayes (F, Kentucky) was drafted ninth overall by the Dakota Wizards to complete the first round.
