NFL Game Summary - Seattle at Indianapolis

(Sunday, October 4th)

Final Score: Indianapolis 34, Seattle 17

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Peyton Manning threw for 353 yards with a pair of touchdowns, leading the Indianapolis Colts to a 34-17 rout of the Seattle Seahawks at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Donald Brown and Joseph Addai added rushing scores for the Colts (4-0), who have won their first four games for the fourth time in the past five years. Indianapolis scored on four drives of 78 yards or more and extended its regular-season winning streak to 13 games dating back to last year.

Manning completed 31-of-41 passes with an interception and threw his 342nd career touchdown pass to tie Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton for third on the all-time list. He now trails just Dan Marino (420) and Brett Favre (469).

"We played greatness, one of the finest of all time," Seahawks head coach Jim Mora said of Manning. "He proves it again and again. Regardless of circumstances, he comes up with the play."

Seneca Wallace, again playing in place of the injured Matt Hasselbeck, threw for 257 yards with a touchdown on 33-of-45 passing for Seattle, which scored two late touchdowns to make the score respectable. He also fumbled twice and was sacked five times, once by Dwight Freeney, who played sparingly despite reports earlier this week that he would miss at least two games with a quad injury.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh caught eight passes for 103 yards in defeat, as the Seahawks (1-3) lost their third straight game. Seattle had numerous chances in the first half, but could not cash in.

The Seahawks managed just 49 yards rushing, including 16 on four carries by former Colts star Edgerrin James. He was saluted with a video tribute between the third and fourth quarters.

The Colts took their first possession of the game 80 yards for the first score. Manning completed each of his four throws during the 10-play march and Brown capped it with a one-yard touchdown run.

Seattle reached the Indianapolis 43 with its second series, but lost 12 yards on three consecutive negative plays and punted it away. The Seahawks got the ball back after a punt and marched to the Colts' 37, but a holding penalty stifled the drive and they again punted.

The kick pinned the Colts at their own 10, but Manning directed a nine-play drive for another score. A 35-yard strike to Pierre Garcon keyed the set and Reggie Wayne hauled in a five-yard toss for the touchdown to make it 14-0 with just under 5 1/2 minutes to play in the opening half.

Seattle again mounted a threat on the ensuing series, as passes of 20 yards to Houshmandzadeh and 22 yards to Deion Branch helped set up a first down at the Indianapolis nine. Another holding penalty and a sack forced the Seahawks to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Olindo Mare with 1:22 to play before the break.

That was plenty of time for Manning, who guided the Colts 78 yards in nine plays and found Austin Collie with a 21-yard scoring toss just three seconds prior to the intermission. Collie's first career TD reception sent the Colts to the intermission with a 21-3 cushion.

Indianapolis then took the ball first in the second half and drove 80 yards for another score. Addai capped the 12-play march that took nearly seven minutes with a 12-yard touchdown run.

Manning was picked off late in the third quarter for his only mistake of the day, but the Seahawks gave the ball back a few minutes later when Wallace was sacked and fumbled.

Adam Vinatieri booted field goals of 37 yards and 19 yards in the fourth quarter -- the second coming after another Wallace fumble.

Wallace scored on a seven-yard scramble late in the fourth and the Seahawks recovered an onsides kick that led to a one-yard scoring pass from Wallace to Owen Schmitt with 19 seconds to play for the final margin.

"All across the board I thought we played well," Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said. "Being 4-0 doesn't guarantee anything except it means we won't go 3-13...Every week is tough and it is a long season."
