National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Washington
(Wednesday, June 4)
Final Score: Washington 8, Philadelphia 4
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Strasburg struck out 11 over seven strong innings, Anthony Rendon went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBI, and the Washington Nationals notched an 8-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle test of a three-game set Wednesday at Nationals Park.
Strasburg (5-4) surrendered four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits without issuing a walk to pick up his second straight victory and also added an RBI and a run scored at the plate.
"(I'm) just trying to go out there and do my job, that's the bottom line," said Strasburg. "Some teams I pitch well against and others I don't. I guess it's just how I'm feeling at the time."
Denard Span and Danny Espinosa each added two hits and two RBI for the Nationals, who have won four of their last five games.
A.J. Burnett (3-5) absorbed the loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits and four walks over six innings. John Mayberry, Jr. ripped a two-run, pinch-hit homer for the Phillies, who have dropped five straight games.
"There were a couple of long at-bats and then I made a mistake up to Espinosa," said Burnett. "A few things here and there that I don't do that I need get back to doing what I do."
Washington scored four runs in the fourth. Adam LaRoche doubled before Wilson Ramos and Ian Desmond walked to load the bases with one out. Espinosa followed with a two-run double off the wall in right. Strasburg's run-scoring single to center and Span's RBI fielder's choice made it 4-0.
The Phillies got two runs back in the fifth. Domonic Brown singled to right, moved to second on LaRoche's error and crossed the plate on Reid Brignac's double to left. Brignac moved to third when Ben Revere grounded out. After Burnett struck out swinging, Jimmy Rollins hit a sharp grounder down the first-base line that LaRoche was able to stop. Strasburg ran over to cover first but was unable to control LaRoche's throw, allowing Brignac to score on the play to bring the visitors within 4-2.
Rendon's leadoff homer in the home half made it 5-2 before the Nationals tacked on three more runs in the sixth. With one out, Espinosa singled and stole second before Strasburg walked. Span followed with an RBI double before Rendon's two-run single made it an 8-2 contest.
Mayberry entered as a pinch-hitter for Burnett in the seventh and hit a two- run homer to center to slice Philadelphia's deficit to 8-4.
