Serena whips Ivanovic to capture Cincy title
Mason, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning U.S. Open champion Serena Williams was an easy straight-set winner over Ana Ivanovic on Sunday to win the $2.5 million Western & Southern Open tennis event.
The top-seeded Williams had little trouble in the 6-4, 6-1 victory over ninth- seeded Ivanovic to capture her fifth title of the year. Williams fired 12 aces to Ivanovic's one in the 62-minute match.
It was Williams' first title at this event as she had failed in her previous five appearances, and is her 62nd singles title, overall. The only event she has played six times without claiming the title is Sydney.
"It's just amazing to finally win here. The fans were amazing and it's so wonderful to be here," Williams said.
Williams had fallen to Ivanovic in the fourth round of this year's Australian Open, but has now won the past three matchups.
Ivanovic was looking for her fourth title of the season and 15th of her career.
Williams collected $467,300 with the victory.
