Radwanska downs Venus for Rogers Cup title
Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Third-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska defeated unseeded American Venus Williams in straight sets to capture the Rogers Cup title on Sunday afternoon.
Radwanska had little trouble in disposing of the tired Williams, 6-4, 6-2, to capture her first title of the 2014 season and 14th of her career.
Radwanska dropped the opening game of the first set, but then ran off four straight games to take control. Williams broke back and drew within 4-3 only to see Radwanska win the set 6-4.
Radwanska then broke Williams to open the second set, but Williams got back into it with a fourth-game break to even the set at 2-2. Radwanska, though, broke back in the fifth game to regain control and won out to take the match.
Williams, who beat her sister Serena in the semifinals, had played three straight three-set matches and the 34-year-old looked tired in this one.
Radwanska, 25, improved to 4-5 career against Venus, who was seeking her second title of 2014.
Radwanska collected $467,300 for her first-place finish, while Venus grabbed $227,000 for second.
