Errani moves on at China Open
Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Fifth-seeded Italian Sara Errani was among Saturday's first-round winners at the lucrative $5.185 million China Open tennis event.
Errani beat Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium by a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 margin on the hardcourts at the National Tennis Center.
Roberta Vinci, the No. 10 seed, moved on with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.
Other wins from seeded players came from No. 11 seed Sloane Stephens and 12th- seeded Carla Suarez Navarro. Stephens discarded Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-4, 6-4 and Suarez Navarro outlasted Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
A minor upset took place when Urszula Radwanska of Poland took down 16th- seeded Simona Halep 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).
Other first-round wins came from Francesca Schiavone, Monica Niculescu and Varvara Lepchenko.
Victoria Azarenka whipped fellow former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova in last year's finale in Beijing.
This week's top seed is current world No. 1 Serena Williams, who was the China Open champ back in 2004.
The 2013 China Open titlist will collect $860,000.
