Vela helps Real Sociedad edge Valladolid

San Sebastian, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Vela struck midway through the opening period to lead Real Sociedad to a 1-0 victory over lowly Valladolid at the Anoeta on Thursday.

The former Arsenal striker broke through in the 23rd minute and it proved to be all the home side would need to collect all three points.

The victory sees La Real keep its hopes of Champions League football next season alive as the club improves to 49 points to move to within seven points of fourth-place Athletic Bilbao.

Valladolid stays second from bottom in the La Liga table with 27 points from its 30 matches.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Jeremy Perbet notched the lone goal in Villarreal's 1-0 win at Getafe, Almeria erased a two-goal deficit to get a point from a 2-2 draw with Valencia and Real Betis earned its second win from its last four outings with a 3-1 defeat of Levante.
