Sporting downs Olhanense to maintain strong start
Lisbon, Portugal (Sports Network) - Second-half goals from Fredy Montero and Andre Martins propelled Sporting Lisbon to a 2-0 win at Olhanense, keeping the club in second place.
Sporting has earned 10 points from its first four games and trails leaders FC Porto by two points, while Olhanense sustained its second defeat of the campaign and sits in the bottom half of the league.
It took until the 51st minute for Sporting to break the deadlock, and it came from Montero, who leads the league with six goals in his first four games with the club.
Martins then notched the second goal of the game for the visitors nine minutes later and Sporting was able to see out the rest of the match to maintain its one-point lead on third-place Braga.
Braga was involved in an eventful 3-2 win over Estoril as Carneiro Wanderson was sent off just 15 minutes into the match for Braga.
Evandro scored on a penalty kick following the dismissal for Estoril, but Alan was able to pull his team level in the 33rd despite playing down a man.
Estoril was also reduced to 10 men early in the second half, and Alan scored from the penalty spot to put Braga in front, while Custodio made it 3-1 with a goal of his own after Estoril had another player sent off in the 64th.
Porto maintained its perfect start with a 2-0 home win against Gil Vicente courtesy of first-half goals from Silvestre Varela and Jackson Martinez, while Benfica got two goals from Ezequiel Garay in a 3-1 win over Pacos Ferreira.
Guimaraes edged Rio Ave, 1-0, behind an 89th-minute goal from Andre, Academica won 2-1 over Belenenses, which finished the match with nine men, Pintassilgo's goal in the 86th minute was enough for a 1-0 Arouca win at Nacional, while Derley tallied two goals in the second half of a 4-2 road win for Maritimo over Setubal.
