Catania's relegation fears deepen after loss to Hellas
Verona, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Catania's survival hopes took another blow on Sunday as the club sustained a 4-0 defeat at Hellas Verona, leaving the team on the bottom of Serie A.
Luca Toni struck the opening goal for Hellas after six minutes, and he notched a second goal in the 28th to double the lead for the hosts.
Marquinho scored on the stroke of halftime to make it 3-0, and Gomez added another goal 15 minutes from time, leaving Catania five points from safety with three matches remaining.
Frison was called into action early for Catania, but after saving a shot from Juan Iturbe, Toni was on hand to pounce on the rebound for his 19th goal of the campaign six minutes into the contest.
Toni was at it again in the 28th when he finished off Jacopo Sala's right-wing cross from six yards, while he had a hand in the third goal as well by playing Gomez down the right wing, where he picked out Marquinho with a cross that made it 3-0.
There was no way back for Catania in the second half and Gomez found the net himself in the 75th with another assist from Sala.
Cagliari secured its safety on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Parma that saw Mauricio Pinilla score the lone goal in the 35th minute from the penalty spot.
Livorno remains second from the bottom and three points from safety after a 2-0 home defeat to Lazio with Stefano Mauri and Antonio Candreva providing the goals.
Sampdoria managed a 2-1 win over Chievo despite being a man down and a goal down with 10 minutes to play.
Shkodran Mustafi was sent off in the 64th minute, allowing Cyril Thereau to score from the penalty spot, putting Chievo up 1-0.
But goals from Citadin Eder and Roberto Soriano gave Sampdoria an unlikely 2-1 win that keeps Chievo just two points above the drop zone.
Ciro Immobile scored his league-leading 21st goal of the season as Torino topped Udinese, 2-0, while Giuseppe De Luca scored in the 82nd minute to help Atalanta earn a 1-1 draw with 10-man Genoa.
