Roma rolls over Parma to close gap on Juve
Rome, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Roma moved to within eight points of Serie A leaders Juventus on Wednesday with a 4-2 home victory against Parma.
Goals from Gervinho and Francesco Totti in the first 16 minutes helped Roma take a 2-1 lead into halftime before Miralem Pjanic and Rodrigo Taddei secured the victory with goals of their own over the second 45 minutes.
The win also takes Roma nine points clear of third-place Napoli and virtually assures the capital club of a place in the Champions League next season.
The match was originally scheduled to take place in February but was postponed after just eight minutes because of heavy rain, forcing it to be moved to Wednesday.
And Roma wasted little time in getting things started as Gervinho pounced on a loose ball to tap it into the empty net after Mattia Destro's shot hit the post.
Parma came back and leveled the contest a few minutes later through Afriyie Acquah, who scored his first goal for the club on the turn.
But Totti restored the lead only one minute after that as he provided a fine first-time finish from Miralem Pjanic's pass.
Destro struck the crossbar with a header before the break, but Roma took control after that as Pjanic scored following a deflected shot from Gervinho, while Taddei made it 4-1 to Roma eight minutes from time when he nodded home a cross from Alessandro Florenzi.
Jonathan Biabiany then pulled a goal back for Parma in the 90th minute that did little to take away from Roma's fifth successive league victory.
