Dortmund signs Friedrich
Dortmund, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Borussia Dortmund announced Thursday that the club has signed defender Manuel Friedrich on a free transfer.
Friedrich, 34, had been on trial at Dortmund as manager Jurgen Klopp sought reinforcements following the long-term loss of Neven Subotic to a serious knee injury. Dortmund's defensive situation was made worse this week after Mats Hummels was injured in Germany's 1-0 defeat of England on Tuesday.
"With the signing we have reacted to the injuries in our defensive department," sporting director Michael Zorc said. "Manuel Friedrich has a lot of experience and had made a very good impression in training."
Friedrich and Klopp previously worked together at Mainz, and it is possible that the veteran defender could find his way into the squad for Dortmund's test against Bayern on Saturday.
