Van Marwijk takes charge of Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Bert van Marwijk has been appointed the new manager at Hamburg after signing a two-year contract with the option of a further season.
Van Marwijk replaces Thorsten Fink, who was fired last week, and he becomes Hamburg's 11th manager in just nine years.
The former Netherlands and Borussia Dortmund boss inherits a Hamburg team that has won one of its first six games and sits in 16th place in the Bundesliga table, and he recognizes the task at hand.
"There is no need to tell me that Hamburg is a great city," Van Marwijk said on Wednesday. "I am aware of the situation and it is not pretty. It will not be easy."
Van Marwijk guided the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final, and he has spent the last two years away from the game since stepping down from his international role.
