Bayern's Martinez to miss three weeks with groin injury
Munich, Germany (Sports Network) - Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez will miss the next three weeks after undergoing groin surgery on Wednesday.
Martinez initially sustained the injury in Spain's friendly with Ecuador, and he scored a late equalizer for Bayern in the team's UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea last Friday.
After the match, the 25-year-old revealed that he was unable to play the full 90 minutes because of pain, and the club has decided that surgery is the best option this early in the season.
The former Athletic Bilbao standout scored three goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern last season, and the injury will prevent him from playing in Bayern's first Champions League match against CSKA Moscow as well as league encounters with Hannover and Schalke.
Bayern is now short on midfield options for the near future with Martinez out as he joins Thiago Alcantara, Mario Gotze and Bastian Schweinsteiger on the sidelines.
