Atletico, Chelsea play to scoreless draw

Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Atletico Madrid and Chelsea opened their Champions League semifinal tie with a 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho deployed a defensive-minded squad with David Luiz, Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel sitting in front of the back-four.

The plan worked to perfection, even though starting goalkeeper Petr Cech was forced out of the match in the 18th minute due to injury.

Atletico struggled to create much in the way of scoring opportunities, recording just four shots on target in the contest.

The Blues, though, were unable to sneak a potentially vital away goal, essentially making next Wednesday's return match at Stamford Bridge a must- win. Atletico can advance to the final with a victory or any scoring draw.
