Bayern's Schweinsteiger rescues a draw at United

Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Bayern Munich fell behind early in the second half of its Champions League quarterfinal tie with Manchester United on Tuesday, but Bastian Schweinsteiger equalized to help the German club salvage a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Nemanja Vidic had given United the lead in the 58th minute, but Schweinsteiger netted the tying goal eight minutes later to send the two sides into next week's second leg level at a goal apiece.

Danny Welbeck thought he had given United the lead after only three minutes when the England international slammed a half-volley into the net, but the goal was disallowed due to a high boot in the build-up.

Bayern dominated the first half from a possession standpoint, but Welbeck enjoyed the best scoring opportunity when he found himself one-on-one with Manuel Neuer five minutes before the break. Welbeck opted for a cheeky chip but Neuer managed to palm the attempt to safety to keep Bayern in the game.

United eventually grabbed the lead shortly after the halftime interval thanks to Vidic, who went away from goal to nod Wayne Rooney's corner kick just inside the far post.

But the lead did not last long as Bayern equalized in the 66th minute. Mario Mandzukic met a cross to the back post and nodded the delivery back in front of goal for an unmarked Schweinsteiger to cooly convert from close range.

Neither side managed to break through for a winner, but Bayern was dealt a major blow for the return match at the Allianz Arena when Javi Martinez picked up a yellow card in the 89th minute and Schweinsteiger was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offense, ruling the duo out of the second leg.

In Tuesday's other Champions League quarterfinal, Barcelona was held to a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou by Atletico Madrid.

Atletico had taken the lead in spectacular fashion when Diego uncorked a shot into the upper corner in the 56th minute, but Barcelona managed to get on level terms in the 71st when Neymar latched on to a through ball and buried a first-time shot.
