United to face Bayern Munich in quarterfinals

Nyon, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester United will face defending European champions Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after the draw was completed Friday.

United went down 2-0 in the first leg of its round of 16 tie against Greek side Olympiakos and needed a hat trick from striker Robin van Persie in Wednesday's second leg at Old Trafford to earn a 3-2 aggregate victory.

But after pulling out a win that some could argue saved manager David Moyes' job, the Red Devils were rewarded by being dealt the toughest hand of the round.

Bayern have been unstoppable this season. They advanced to the quarterfinals after dispatching Arsenal for the second consecutive season and appear ready to clinch the Bundesliga this weekend.

Also in the quarterfinals, defending La Liga champions Barcelona will face Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, while Real Madrid will face German outfit Borussia Dortmund.

Madrid and Dortmund met in last season's semifinal round with Dortmund winning, 3-2, on aggregate, but with Gareth Bale in the fold for Real and Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski, who netted four goals in last season's semifinal opening leg, suspended for this year's first leg, Madrid could have the upper hand.

Finally, French champions Paris Saint-Germain return to the quarterfinals with an intriguing matchup against Chelsea. PSG gave a good account of itself last season before being eliminated by Barcelona, and Les Parisiens will again get the opportunity to prove themselves on the biggest stage in Europe against a proper heavyweight club.
