United, Chelsea share the spoils at Old Trafford
Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United and Chelsea played to a scoreless draw on Monday in an early-season matchup between title contenders at Old Trafford.
After starting the season with a 4-1 thumping of Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last week, Monday's clash marked manager David Moyes' first home match at the helm, and his club was on the front foot early on.
United's first quality chance came in the 22nd minute when Robin Van Persie ripped a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but it narrowly missed the left post.
Want-away striker Wayne Rooney got a solid run in a substitute role last week and put in a complete 90-minute shift on Monday. He earned his first chance of the night in the 29th minute with a shot on the turn in the penalty area, but it hardly troubled Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Chelsea's best chance of the first half came two minutes before the break when Oscar fired a low shot on target, but United's David De Gea was there for the stop.
After the break, Chelsea found another opportunity to score in the 58th minute when defender Gary Cahill smacked a well-struck shot from about 30 yards out, but De Gea was able to parry it away with a dive to his right.
The diminutive Rooney found one more golden opportunity in the 78th minute as he ripped a powerful strike on frame, but Cech dove to his right to keep it out and keep United off the board.
The match opened up in the final 15 minutes and United pressed forward in the final minutes and had one final opportunity with a corner kick in stoppage time, but Van Persie's corner kick was harmlessly cleared away as both clubs settled for a point apiece.
